Clam Digging in Mikawa Bay, from Spring to Early Summer
Mikawa Bay is an area known for its extensive shallow tidal flats, where you can enjoy shiohigari (clam digging) for asari clams and more. Why not consider it as one of your seaside activities when visiting Nishiura Onsen-GIMPASO in Gamagori, Aichi?
Season
General Shiohigari Season
Generally, the best season for clam digging in Mikawa Bay is from April to June, with the hours around spring tides and low tide being the best times to go. Since the timing of the tides differs from day to day, we recommend checking a tide table before you set out. Opening status, fees, and equipment rental availability vary by clam-digging site, so please contact the site directly in advance.
What to bring
What to Bring
For clam digging, it is reassuring to bring rubber boots or sandals, work gloves, a clam rake, and a bucket with an ice pack for bringing your catch home. During periods of strong sunlight, don’t forget a hat and sun protection. Many clam-digging sites offer equipment rental, so please check with each facility for details.
